Using Pedometers to Increase Physical Activity and Improve Health: A Systematic Review |
Twenty-six separate studies were evaluated which examined the role of pedometer use and physical activity. The researchers found that regular use of a pedometer to monitor steps walked per day was associated with a significant increase in the level of physical activity. Pedometer users increased their physical activity by 26.9% over their baseline, especially when a step goal (e.g., 10,000 steps per day) was set. Along with the increase in physical activity, pedometer users also had a significant decrease in their body mass index and their blood pressure.
