Reduction in the Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes with Lifestyle Intervention or Metformin |
The purpose of this study was to determine whether lifestyle modification or using the diabetes medication metformin in people at high risk for type 2 diabetes would prevent or delay the development of this disease. Over 3000 men and women with “pre-diabetes” were assigned to three groups: a placebo group, a metformin group, and a lifestyle modification group who were given the goal of losing 7% of their weight and exercising at least 150 minutes per week. After about three years, the researchers found that lifestyle modification reduced the incidence of diabetes by 58% while metformin reduced it by 31% compared to placebo. They concluded that both therapies lowered the chance of developing diabetes in people at high risk for this disease, but that lifestyle modification was more effective than metformin.
