Exceptional Longevity in Men: Modifiable Factors Associated With Survival and Function to Age 90 Years |
This study showed that, for men in their 70’s, a healthy lifestyle which included weight management, blood pressure control, smoking abstinence and regular exercise not only increased the probability of survival to age 90, but was also associated with a lower incidence of chronic disease and better physical function and mental well-being during the late-life years. More than 68% of the men who lived to be 90 rated their late-life health as excellent or very good, and less than 8% reported fair or poor health. Smoking and being overweight were associated with worse late-life physical function while regular exercise was associated with a significantly better late-life function. Smoking was also associated with a decline in mental function.
