Kara Davis, M.D.
I am a native of Chicago, an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana and the University Of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois, and remained on the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine for ten years. I still maintain a partial appointment at that institution however I currently practice at the Christian Community Health Center in the Chicago suburb of South Holland, Illinois. In my years of practice I’ve treated hundreds of men and women with medical conditions either caused by, or exacerbated by their lifestyles. The choices we make on a daily basis—even choices that are seemingly insignificant—have a tremendous impact on our health. Much disease, disability and premature death is entirely preventable.
Poor eating habits and inadequate exercise will certainly add excess body weight, but obesity and being overweight are not simply cosmetic problems. There are serious health consequences like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and arthritis. As a Christian physician, I have spent years treating believers who suffer these consequences, and I know that in many instances, this does not have to be the case.
When I learned that Christians are more obese and overweight than members of other faiths and that we are afflicted with more weight-related diseases as a consequence, I studied the Bible with the desire to grow in my understanding of the connection between our spiritual and physical lives. The insight I gained led to the publication of my first book, Spiritual Secrets to Weight Loss (Siloam Press, 2002) along with many articles featured in Christian magazines and periodicals on health-related topics from a biblical perspective.
More recently, I developed an 8-week course, “Weigh of Life,” which combines lessons on spiritual issues such as self-control and how to handle temptation with information on practical matters such as food types, menu planning and exercise. The objective of “Weigh of Life” is not to fit into a smaller dress or suit size, but to glorify God through the proper care of our bodies, His temple. Spiritual Secrets to Weight Loss: A 50-Day Renewal of Body, Mind and Spirit combines information from the original Spiritual Secrets to Weight Loss with the “Weigh of Life” lessons.
I am married to Bishop Lance Davis, the senior pastor of New Zion Christian Fellowship in Dolton, Illinois, and the mother of four children. I became a Christian in 1991, four years after getting married and one year before our first child was born. As a born-again believer, my greatest passion is that men and women accept the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and eternal salvation. As a pastor’s wife, physician, Bible teacher and mother I have a passion to help Christian men and women take control of their lifestyles through the power of the Holy Spirit, and reap the benefits of better health.
